FAQ

1. Why Africa and the developing world? Aren't there plenty of projects to do at home? There certainly are a lot of worthy projects in your local community. And there are many local charities and non profits available to address them.

But hattrick's “mandate” is look at problems that seem “insurmountable” like world poverty and global warming and inspire small acts that we can do to help out.

2. How do I know all my money goes to the charity? We've linked you directly to the charity's electronic pay page. No money goes to Hattrick.

3. Will I receive a charitable receipt? Yes. The charity, not hattrick, will send you a receipt directly.

4. Then, how does hattrick support itself? All of our administrative costs are covered by private donations. And most of our work is volunteer. Many professionals have donated all or a portion of their time - like our web developers/graphic designers Bluemist, and our IT consultant, Spencer Isaac, and our editor, Sheila Jones.

5. Times are tough. I'd like to help but I don't have any extra money to give to others. We know. That's why doing a hattrick is designed to let you contribute to the project you choose and pay for it with your environmental savings. Although you'll contribute $35 up front you will recoup it in energy savings over time. All of our savings ideas are free to implement.

6. How do I know I'll save as much as you say with my environmental changes? You won't save exactly the figure we provided because utility costs vary so much from area to area. In fact we think you'll likely save more because our figures are from a utility that has some of the lowest energy rates in North America.

Of course there are so many factors we couldn't include in our figures - like models of equipment, whether they have energy saving features, whether your house uses electricity or gas or oil for heat.

But we think we've given you a conservative idea of the savings that small changes can make.
